We were both interested in African American culture but there is so much history behind
African American culture that we had a hard time deciding what we wanted to do. Once our
history teacher found out, he was able to help us brainstorm some ideas. We took the list of
brainstormed ideas and did a little research on each to find which interested us the most. Thus,
leading to us deciding to do the Harlem Renaissance for our History Day topic.
Once we had chosen our topic, we immediately started doing more research. The best
sources that we were able to find on this topic are books. We traveled to a few local libraries
and at each one we were able to find books on the Harlem Renaissance. Out of all the books,
we were even able to find an autobiography of Langston Hughes, who was a part of the Harlem
Renaissance. This was extremely helpful seeing as we were not able to obtain an interview
with anyone who may have experienced the Harlem Renaissance. It really helped us to get a
better understanding.
We both had a slight understanding of what the Harlem Renaissance was when we first
started but there were things that we didn't know much about. For example, we learned more
about specific people that were involved in the Renaissance. We learned how those people
were involved, like what they did to be active in the Harlem Renaissance. We also got a better
understanding of why the Harlem Renaissance actually happened. We just learned to
understand the entirety of the Renaissance.
For us, putting our website together wasn't hard in terms of technology. The difficult part
was deciding what to put on the website, itself. We knew that we needed to put information
about our topic on the website but we also knew that we wanted to put at least a few pictures
on the website. It was hard deciding how much information to put on the site and what specific
information to post on it.
Our topic relates to the theme "Revolution, Reaction, and Reform in History" because the
Harlem Renaissance was a revolution, itself. It was a time when African Americans were
becoming more involved in American culture and it was a movement alone. Many people
actually reacted positively to this this revolution. People that were involved in the Harlem
Renaissance were both African American and white. There were people that said the
Renaissance wasn't a movement for African Americans or that the movement wasn't even
happening. The Harlem Renaissance was important to history because it was how African
Americans were able to get their own culture out to the world and that's exactly what
happened. It's especially important because there were people around the world that learned
and were interested in African American culture.
